Beautiful car, buddy, and, as usual, a well-told yarn about the emotional angst of buying the big stuff we all feel guilty about. Every motorcycle I've ever purchased, I've agonized over while my wife always says, "Just get it; you deserve it." Maybe, but we don't always get to have the things that we deserve, no? I felt a touch of melancholy about the empty seat next to you, left unmentioned. I suspect Kathy was along at least for this maiden voyage back to Taos. Looking forward to getting a ride in it.

The last time Kathy said, “Just get it!” was after I’d test-driven my 2001 Dodge Dakota and was pacing back & forth in the seller’s living room trying to get past myself... (They know, don’t they?) Part of an old savings account of hers that she inherited from her father years ago paid for the Vette, too. Interesting connections & threads, eh. ‘Twas ever thus. I just decided that waiting until I was “ready” for this was a crock.

A few days ago I was gassing it up at my neighborhood station when an unassuming 60-ish fellow came up to me and said, “What year is this? I have a 2010…” He looked nothing at all like someone you’d expect to say something like that. The truck he was filling up at the adjacent pump had seen WAY better days, too. We talked a bit and he gave me his phone number so we can both meet at the St. Francis church sometime and take pictures of our Corvettes together. It might actually happen.

As I left he said (paraphrasing here): “If you ever have a chance to buy a Corvette and you tell yourself no, you’re just screwed…”

Yeah, if you ended up with the right person, they often know more about who you are than you do, and they want you to be happy. That whole waiting thing is an artifact of youth. When you reach this point, you should stop saving bottles of wine for special times or money for when you are comfortable spending it. The time is now, bro, for everything, all of it. Plus, these gifts to ourselves might have some power help us get through the current horrors of our deconstructing democracy.

The time is definitely now for everything. Agree with your last sentence, too.

Congratulations, I knew it was just a matter of time before I'd be reading this story. After the last one was a no go, I knew you'd be soon riding high, or I guess it would be low. As my friend always says, drive fast and take chances!

I want a ride, dude. Preferably from Taos , up over the high road and back down to my place in Nambé. Stopping for lunch at Rancho Chimayo.
